Independent Medical Examination (IME)

Also Referred to as a Compulsory Medical Examinations (CME)

What Is a Compulsory/Independent Medical Examination?

An Independent/Compulsory Medical Examination is a medical evaluation ordered during a legal or insurance claim to assess a person’s injury, condition, or functional limitations. It is conducted by a neutral doctor who was not previously involved in the person’s care. The purpose is to provide an objective medical opinion for use in litigation or claims.

Why a CME or IME Is Requested

A CME or IME is requested to provide an objective medical opinion in legal or insurance cases. Examples include a workers’ compensation claim where the insurer wants to verify an employee’s injury and ability to return to work, a personal injury case assessing the extent of damages after a car accident, a disability claim determining functional limitations, or a medical malpractice dispute where the court needs confirmation of a patient’s condition.

What Is the Difference Between Compulsory and Independent Medical Examination?

What Is an Independent Medical Examination (IME)?

In legal cases, an Independent Medical Examination (IME) is a routine, party‑requested evaluation by a neutral doctor to provide an objective opinion on injury, treatment, or impairment.

What Is a Compulsory Medical Examination (CME)?

A Compulsory Medical Examination (CME) refers to the same type of exam once it is legally mandated by a court or statute, requiring the individual to attend.

The Main Difference

IMEs have always been the standard in litigation, and CMEs are simply IMEs made enforceable through legal authority.
